What to Check

In Kolkata, as everywhere in India, cosmetic procedures are performed by doctors from several different specialities with very different training. The title on the door does not tell you which. These six checks do, and every one can be verified before you book.

A high-quality outcome depends on more than technical skill. Look for a surgeon who has:

MCh or DNB in Plastic Surgery. "Cosmetic surgeon" is not a separate qualification in India. Ask which degree, from which institution, in which year.

Registration

A current entry on the State Medical Council register. It is public, it is free to search, and it takes two minutes.

Hospital

Where the operation actually happens. An accredited hospital with an ICU, a blood bank and an anaesthesia department is safer. Not a day-care room above a run-down clinic.

Qualification

Anaesthesia

A consultant anaesthetist who reviews you before the day of surgery, not on the morning of it.

Volume

How many of your operation, in the last year. A surgeon who performed forty rhinoplasties is a different proposition from a cheaper one who performed four.

Limits

What the operation cannot do in your case — your skin quality, your asymmetry, how long the problem has been there. A plan that mentions no limits is not a plan, it's a sabotage.
